SEO mumbo-jumbo?

in search engine optimization

I am often amazed and sometimes amused at the questions and comments I receive from local business owners about search engine optimization (SEO).

I attended a local business organization meeting just the other day. I was speaking to a representative from a well-known marketing agency here in Richmond, Virginia. When I told her what I did for a living, she commented, “Oh, you do that secret SEO mumbo-jumbo stuff, huh?!”

Further conversation determined that her company worked with an SEO firm (who shall remain nameless) that did that “secret” SEO stuff for their clients. She had no idea what they actually “did” or  whether they were in fact successful or not.

I think this is probably the case with a lot of businesses, however, it doesn’t have to be. It shouldn’t be a mystery. If you are working with an SEO consultant, you should have some idea of what they are doing for you. Ask them (preferably before hiring them) what they will actually do to increase your search engine rankings, qualified visitors and site conversions. Then, ask them how they will measure and communicate your website goals and objectives.

SEO isn’t mumbo-jumbo!

Brilliant post. Gonna try and use some of these issues that you’ve mentioned, on a search engine optimisation project i’m working on.

HI, Mary.

This post reminds me of a SEO Comic I wrote a few years ago. I think you and your readers will appreciate it.
